The Mary Sue problem of characters having easy solutions or not facing real obstacles can be an issue for fictional characters. Like in engineering, I prefer the idea that every decision impacts something else, sometimes positively and sometimes negatively. Or for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I see this abandoned in stories mainly to speed the plot along.
One thing that has struck me about Black Canary is that there is no reason her sonic scream doesn’t impact her. The idea of this painting is that her scream is something that does harm her. And using her power is a tradeoff. Rather than being an easy solution, it has to be thoughtful and meaningful and comes at a price. To me, that adds a dimension of drama to the character and story.
