The subject matter for this was new for me. I don’t think I ever painted a snake before. I like to work with shadow and light. German Expressionism and Film Noir have influenced me. I like the idea of things having a dreamlike or vague memory feel. The final execution is more literal than the direction I’m aiming for, but I like how it turned out.

Like many of my paintings, I started with an underpainting. Instead of sepia alone, I used sepia, burnt sienna and black to help get the darker tones faster.
